FINDING OUR PLACE ON THE ASIAN STAGE
Alison Carroll and Carrillo Gantner
Should we care about our neighbours in the Asian region? write our authors, who have spent a lifetime in such engagement. This has been called the Asian century and Australia as a western neighbour, is being offered unique opportunities. More should be made of the many Australian artists who live and work in China, Japan and Indonesia, as well as the companies that tour with Asialink.  In the past connections made through Foreign Affairs and the Australia Council have been subject to the changing policies of successive governments, and subservient to trade promotions and the overriding need for financial return. The authors outline the way public funding has reflected trade policy over cultural policy and points to the benefits our artists are already bringing us by getting to know our neighbours better.

THE REAL STORY OF THE TELEVISION WE HAD TO HAVE.
The conduct of a commercial television service is not to be considered as merely running a business for the sake of profit. Because of the influence they can bring to bear on the community, the business interests of licensees must at all times be subordinated to the overriding principle that possession of a licence is a public trust for the benefit of all members of our society.

Erin Brannigan has provided an important catalyst with her considered, complex and persuasive study which is a pleasure to ponder on. It should be on the reading list of every dance and creative arts course and disseminated widely through the industry.

Any blogger will know the weird sense of beginning an online ‘conversation’. It's akin to delivering an informal lecture to an empty auditorium. In most cases, you're met with silence. This is no different from a newspaper review, or a novel, or a message scratched into a bus stop seat.
John Bailey, Melbourne arts journalist and bloggist

Wed, 22/02/2012 - 7:30am

A man with wide experience of the responsibilities of public life, former Justice Spigelman will pay tribute to the arts boards he has known; and recall the effort they required, the challenges with which they faced him and the enrichment they have given him over a lifetime.
James Spigelman served as Lieutenant Governor and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of NSW 1998–2011. He has had a long association with the arts, and received his AC in recognition of his services to law, in pursuit of a fairer and more equitable society, and to the visual arts. Since 2010 he has been Chair of the National Library of Australia. He emigrated from Poland with his family at the age of three, and is a graduate of the University of Sydney in Arts, Government and Economics, and later Law. As a student he participated in the 1965 Freedom Ride on behalf of Indigenous people in NSW. From 1972–75 he was Senior Advisor and Principal Private Secretary to Prime Minister Whitlam. In 1976 he was admitted to the NSW Bar and for three years was a member of the Australian Law Reform Commission.Besides the National Library, his community appointments include Councillor of the Australian Film, Television and Radio School 1975–8, Deputy Chair of the Art Gallery of NSW 1983–8; Board member 1995–98 of the Brett Whiteley Foundation, the National Gallery and the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences.
