Michael was a principal dancer with West Australian Ballet, Queensland Ballet and Oper der Stadt Köln, and since 1995 has worked as an artistic director, artistic co-ordinator, literary events manager, librettist, director and choreographer. In his role as director and choreographer Michael has worked for Sydney Theatre Company, Melbourne Theatre Company, Opera Australia, Bell Shakespeare Co and Griffin Theatre Company. In 2004 Opera Australia presented the opera Madeline Lee, which he co-wrote and directed and which earned seven Helpmann Awards nominations. From 2006–09 he was director of the Brisbane Writers Festival. In 2010 he edited the writings of the movement teacher Keith Bain, Keith Bain on Movement (Currency House 2010).
